MORE THAN 24 hours have passed since that absolute fuck-up in Dublin: Leinster 76 – Glasgow Warriors 14, and Danny Wilson remains as Head Coach of the Scotstoun outfit – FOR FUCK SAKE, WHY IS HE STILL THERE?
After such a humbling, no, make that humiliation, any coach with a modicum of self-respect would have admitted defeat and handed-in his notice. It's not as if the defeat came out of left field, Glasgow has been sunk at HMS Hood pace in most of the big games this season. This is a club going down the stank at break neck speed. Since you cannot get rid of all the players, the buck has to stop somewhere and that place is with the coach.
If Wilson will not do the decent thing, then TCD, our glorious leader should start to earn his vast salary, make the call and get rid.
I wrote these paragraphs on Monday morning, but, by mid-afternoon, the SRU had acted and it was announced that Wilson had been “stood down” from his position with immediate effect.
Now that may be terminology, given the SRU media department struggles with press releases, maybe that's a polite way of saying he's been sacked, since those awfully nice boys and girls inside Murrayfield don't want to offend anyone.
But, the SRU has history of shuffling the deck-chairs and keeping useless people in well-paid jobs, past their sell-by date. Let's hope this isn't another case of this, with Wilson turning-up in another SRU role sometime between now and next season. He already got maybe six months longer than he deserved in the top job at Scotstoun.
So, who to replace him? I would like to see a young Scottish coach getting the gig, but, it's difficult to think of someone who might be ready.
I have a soft spot for Kenny Murray, but, I suspect the SRU hierarchy doesn't quite see him as Field Officer material. But, he's a Glasgow guy, who has served his time with the club, and who had a good record as Head Coach at Ayr, so maybe he's the man.
Otherwise, I fear TCD's friends at E'Sportif have already been consulted and we might see a non-Scot parachuted in to fill the vacancy.
If we are to go big or go home – I would suggest seeing what it would take to entice Stuart Lancaster away from Leinster to Scotstoun, but, that might be a bit rich for the SRU.
Meanwhile, just as well tonight's SGM at Murrayfield can only discuss and vote on the Governance issues. I fancy, had there been an 'Any Other Business' part of the meeting, one or two delegates might have been asking about the Scotstoun job and Saturday' Dublin debacle.

ReplyDeleteI think its highly unlikely that DW will be staying in Scottish Rugby. Perhaps TCD has learned from his bourach with the Russell affair and is less trigger happy and going by the book these days? i hear the HR director is quite good.
Stuart Lancaster to Glasgow - ha ha ha ha He would be mad to take that job over whats he has to play with in Leinster.
