MANAGEMENT graciously allowed me to watch Scotland v France on Sunday afternoon; we were having family friends over for a special meal so she was toiling over a hot stove, but, she did come through and sit down, just as France began to cut into out ten-point lead: "Ah, the rot has set-in", said she who knows only one thing about rugby: "The players all have lovely thighs".
But, as usual, she was correct and the slide into the expected French victory was under way. C'es la vie Ecosse.
Why are we so shite? I wish I knew, all I do know is we are good, but not good enough, it is becoming ever more frustrating, but, Ihope to live long enough to see the good days return.
When I first got really interested in rugby, because my elder brother had started to play at school - we were coming to the end of that long, very painful series of umpteen losing games on the trot, including that horrendous 44-0 thumping from the Springboks.
I can vaguely remember being intrigued by the 1953 All Blacks, or more-correctly, Bob Scott, the full back who could kick the ball the length of the park in his bare feet. I can recall Arthur Smith's Match, against the Welsh in 1955, which ended the long losing run and thereafter, I was hooked.
Compared to back then, and to the nearly years of the 1960s, this current run isn't all that bad. It is our lot in rugby to suffer narrow defeats, false dawns, disappointments and down-turns, but, it will all be worthwhile when, as it surely must happen - we get a few breaks from a referee, we string together a win or two, we win a Triple Crown or a Grand Slam, and we silence the braying mob at Twickenham.
Just, don't take too-long about it SRU - today is my 65th birthday and I want to live long enough to enjoy some autumn or winter sun.
BY THE Way, I never thought I'd say this - but - the Kiwi Sheep Worriers were right: Wayne Barnes is a useless referee. But, he's not alone, it's apparently built into the game's DNA these days - get rid of O'Brien and his minions say I.
A cracking game of rugby at Firhill on Friday night was partially-spoiled by an Irish referee who seemed hell-bent on ensuring that Leinster didn't lose: he came up with some absolutely cracking tight calls, all favouring the visitors, with whom he had travelled from Dublin and with whom he was sharing a Glasgow hotel.
Now, there was probably nothing in this, but, he ought not to have been put into a position where such logistical decisions are questioned.
JUST a thought, but, should the worst come to the worst and Rangers FC go under, why don't the SRU immediately re-name the Warriors: Glasgow Rangers - it just might attract bigger crowds to Scotstoun next season.
